Ajigawa wrestlers stand outside the stable (c. 2023)
Ajigawa stable (安治川部屋, Ajigawa-beya), is a stable of sumo wrestlers, part of the Isegahama ichimon or group of stables. It was formed by former sekiwake Aminishiki in December 2022 after he branched off from Isegahama stable.
As of 2024, it has six wrestlers, including one foreigner, Aonishiki from Ukraine.
The stable is located in the Ishijima district of Koto ward in Tokyo. It was temporarily based in the Senda district until June 2023, while the Ishijima location was being built. The new building was inaugurated on 16 June 2023 in the presence of tate-gyoji Shikimori Inosuke and masters Isegahama and Asakayama.
The stable also houses Shiro, a golden retriever, who is the stablemaster’s dog.
History[]
Branching out of Isegahama stable, unusually it was set up with fully new wrestlers, with none transferring over from Isegahama at opening. Initially with four wrestlers and one yobidashi, it was quite a small stable. Despite so, in late 2023 and early 2024, Anosho, Aonishiki and Anhibiki won back-to-back lower division championships. Anosho won the jonokuchi and jonidan championships in July and September 2023, followed by Aonishiki winning those same cups in November 2023 and January 2024. In that latter tournament being the one when Anhibiki won his jonokuchi championship.
The stable got its first salaried wrestler (sekitori) with the promotion of Ukrainian Aonishiki to the Juryo division in November 2024.
Ring Name Conventions[]
Following the tradition of the previous incarnation of the stable, the stable's wrestlers have ring names starting with the kanji 安 (pronounced a or an, meaning peaceful). Also by having this character, it can be seen as a sign of deference to the stablemaster, the former Aminishiki. Examples of this convention are: Anzakura and Agora.
