Aranami Hideyoshi - 荒波 秀義 (born November 16, 1940 - September 2, 2010) was a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Chinzei, Saga. He made his debut in January 1956 and last wrestled for Tokitsukaze stable. He reached the makuuchi division in May 1963. His highest rank was maegashira 4 and he retired in July 1966.

Career[]

Early Career[]

Makiyama made his professional debut in January 1956, wrestling fro Tokitsukaze stable. He was promoted to sandanme in November 1957 and makushita in July 1959. In his second makushita tournament, Makiyama finished with a perfect 8-0 record, but missed out on the yusho after losing to Matsushima in the playoff. In July 1961 he posted a 6-1 record at the rank of makushita 5 and was promoted to juryo for the following September 1961 tournament.

Juryo Career[]

In his juryo debut, he finished with an 8-7 record and was able to establish himself in the juryo division. In March 1962 he changed his shikona to "Aranami" (荒波). In March 1963 he finished with a 10-5 record at the rank of juryo 3 and was promoted to makuuchi in May 1963.

Makuuchi Career[]

Aranami could only manage a 3-12 record in his top division debut and was demoted back down to juryo. He returned to makuuchi in January 1964 but finished with a poor 5-10 record. In November 1964 he produced his first top division winning record of 8-7 and followed with another 8-7 record in January 1965 to earn a promotion to the rank of maegashira 4. After falling back down to juryo in May 1966 he announced his retirement after the following July 1966 tournament.

Retirement from Sumo[]

After retiring, Aranami left the sumo world completely. He was engaged in the shipbuilding industry in Nagasaki Prefecture which is close to his home prefecture of Saga. After leaving the shipbuilding company he moved to Fukuoka and opened up a chanko restaurant called "Chanko Aranami" (ちゃんこ荒波), but the restaurant closed down by 2004.

He died on September 2, 2010, at the age of 69.

Aranami was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a hidari-yotsu (right hand outside, left hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). His most common kimarite was yorikiri, or force out. He was also fond of employing tsuridashi, or lift out.
