Arimayama Ryuemon - 有馬山 龍右エ門 (born 1785 - February 8, 1835) was a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Muko District, Settsu. He made his debut in October 1808 and wrestled for Katsunoura stable. He reached the makuuchi division in November 1813. His highest rank was ozeki and he retired in January 1824.

Career[]

Born in Muko District, Settsu Province (currently part of Nishinomiya, Hyogo), he initally joined Osaka sumo's Onogawa stable and was a disciple of the 5th yokozuna Onogawa. He wrestled under the shikona "Naruogata Zenta" (鳴尾潟 善太), however, he later left for Edo sumo in October 1808 and joined Katsunoura stable, making his debut at the juryo division. In 1810 he took the shikona "Tsuzumigataki Choemon" (鼓ヶ滝 調右エ門) and reached makuuchi in November 1813. He was promoted to sekiwake in October 1818 and was given the shikona "Arimayama" (有馬山) in March 1819, named after the mountains by Arima Onsen. He was promoted to ozeki in October 1821, but only lasted there for two tournaments and was demoted in October 1822. Upon demotion, he took the shikona "Iwamigata Joemon" (岩見潟 丈右エ門). He retired from sumo in January 1824.

Retirement from Sumo[]

After retiring, he remained in the sumo world as an elder under the name Onogawa. He died on February 8, 1835, at the age of 50.
