Career[]
Early Career[]
Born in Zentsuji, Kagawa, Ishikawa joined Sadogatake stable and made his professional debut in March 1958. He initially wrestled under the shikona "Kotogahira" (琴ヶ平) before settling with "Kotoarashi" (琴嵐) in March 1959. He was promoted to sandanme in November 1959 and makushita in November 1960. He was unable to establish himself in makushita util he won the sandanme yusho with a perfect 7-0 record in May 1962. In September 1965, he changed his shikona to "Asakaze" (Asakaze and Hasegawa are the only sekitori to not adopt the "Koto" prefix for their ring name). In September 1967, he produced a 5-2 record at the rank of makushita 2 and was promoted to juryo for the following tournament.
Juryo Career[]
Asakaze was ranked in juryo for a total of 19 tournaments, however, he was unable to reach the top division. His highest rank was juryo 2 which he achieved in the January 1970 tournament. In this tournament, he faced off against four makuuchi wrestlers, defeating maegashira Daisetsu and future ozeki Asahikuni. By the end of the tenth day, he was at a comfortable 6 wins 4 losses record, however, he missed out on his chance of a makuuchi promotion as he lost his last five matches to finish with a 6-9 record. He was demoted back down to makushita in March 1971 and he announced his retirement after going winless in July 1971.
Fighting Style[]
Asakaze was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a migi-yotsu (left hand outside, right hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). His most common kimarite was yorikiri (force out), uwatenage (overarm throw), and shitatenage (underarm throw).
