Ayanishiki Kyugoro - 綾錦 久五郎 (born December 8, 1911 - February 24, 2003) was a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Shika, Ishikawa. He made his debut in October 1928 and wrestled for Minatogawa stable. He reached the makuuchi division in January 1936. His highest rank was maegashira 11 and he retired in May 1939.

Career[]

Early Career[]

Kyoji Toda joined Minatogawa stable and made his professional debut in October 1928 under the shikona "Notonishiki" (能登錦). Notonishiki reached juryo in May 1934 and changed his shikona to "Ayanishiki" (綾錦) in the following January 1935 tournament. He subsequently won the juryo yusho in May 1935 with a dominant 10-1 record and was promoted to makuuchi in January 1936.

Makuuchi Career[]

Ayanishiki finished with a poor 3-8 record in his top division debut and was demoted back down to juryo. He returned to makuuchi in January 1938 and finished with a solid 8-5 record. He was promoted to a career-best maegashira 11, but could only muster out three wins in the following May 1938 tournament and was demoted back down to juryo. He retired from sumo shortly after in May 1939.

Retirement from Sumo[]

After retiring, Ayanishiki was unable to obtain elder stock and left the Japan Sumo Association. He later ran his own business from 1955 to 1991. He also served as an unofficial coach for Sadogatake stable.

Fighting Style[]

Ayanishiki was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a hidari-yotsu (right hand outside, left hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). His most common kimarite was uchigake (inside leg trip).
