Early Career[]

Born in Choshi, Chiba, he joined Yamawake stable and made his professional debut in May 1938 under the shikona "Chikuozan" (竹旺山). He was promoted to sandanme in May 1940 and makushita in May 1941. Chikuozan was up the ranks at a consistent pace and was promoted to juryo in June 1945. At the time of his juryo debut, he had not produced a single losing record. After three years in juryo, Chikuozan was promoted to makuuchi in May 1948.

Makuuchi Career[]

Chikuozan finished with a solid 6-5 record in his top division debut and was promoted to the rank of maegashira 16 for the October 1948 tournament. He finished with a poor 3-8 record in this tournament and retired prior to the start of the January 1949 tournament.

Retirement from Sumo[]

After retiring, Chikuozan left the Japan Sumo Association and became an actor. He mainly appeared in Toei historical films alongside yokozuna Azumafuji. Chikuozan died on January 5, 1977, at the age of 55.

Fighting Style[]

Chikuozan was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a migi-yotsu (left hand outside, right hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). He was fond of employing uwatenage (overarm throw).
