Dairyu Takahiro - 大龍 隆寛 (born October 15, 1944 - July 27, 1999) was a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Suzuka, Mie. He made his debut in May 1961 and last wrestled for Tomozuna stable. He reached the juryo division in March 1966. His highest rank was juryo 6 and he retired in May 1970.

Career[]

Matoba made his debut in May 1961, wrestling for Tomozuna stable. He was promoted to sandanme in November 1961 and makushita in March 1963. He changed his shikona to "Dairyu" (大龍) in November 1964. He was promoted to juryo in March 1966. He was ranked in juryo for a total of 11 tournaments, but he was very injury prone. He sprained his left knee in November 1966 which resulted in him falling back down to makushita. He returned to juryo in March 1969, but he fractured his right ankle in January 1970 and was demoted back down to makushita in March 1970.

Matoba (まと場)

After losing his sekitori status, he retired from sumo in May 1970. In 1972 he opened up a restaurant called "Matoba" (まと場) in Suzuka, Mie, which specializes in Japanese beef dishes.

Death[]

He died on July 27, 1999, at the age of 54 due to liver cirrhosis.

Fighting Style[]

Dairyu was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a migi-yotsu (left hand outside, right hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). His most common kimarite was yorikiri, or force out.
