Altan-Ochir Asgakhad was born in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China, and is of Mongolian descent.[1] His father and Inner Mongolian sumo wrestler Sokokurai were wrestling acquaintances and Asgakhad has known Sokokurai, his future stablemaster, since his early childhood.[2]
When Asgakhad was in junior high school, he played basketball, but in his second year, he visited Japan for the first time and decided to switch to sumo after participating in the Hakuho Cup as a representative of China.[1] Through the introduction of Sokokurai, he came to Japan to attend Hiryu High School and was a member of the school's sumo club. After graduating from high school, he became a trainee at Arashio Stable. During his training period, he attended a Japanese language school and a sports vocational school to further his education (this was necessary to maintain his student visa, which he initially obtained for his high school studies).[2]
Career[]
Early Career[]
He made his professional debut in November 2021 and was given the shikona "Daiseizan" (大青山) which is derived from Daqing Mountain in his hometown of Hohhot, Inner Mongolia.[2] In his first three tournaments, Daiseizan finished with dominant 6-1 records. In July 2022 tournament, he was aiming for the sandanme yusho, but lost his final match to former ozeki Asanoyama who had just returned from a one month suspension. Daiseizan's progression up the banzuke was delayed after he missed two tournaments in September and November 2022 after undergoing surgery due to a fracture in his right wrist.[3][4]
Daiseizan returned to the dohyo in January 2023, having fallen down to the jonidan division, and posted strong records which earned him a promotion to makushita in July 2023. In September 2023, Daiseizan finished with a strong 6-1 record which qualified him for a seven-man playoff for the makushita yusho, however, he lost in the second round to Kayo. Despite missing out on the yusho, Daiseizan continued to post consecutive winning records. In March 2024, Daiseizan finished with a 6-1 record which sent him to the rank of makushita 3 for the May 2024 tournament. Daiseizan got off to a shaky start in this tournament and his record was 1-3 by the end of day 7. Nevertheless, Daiseizan won his remaining bouts, including a win over juryo-ranked Kazekeno. He was promoted to makushita 2 for the July 2024 tournament. In this tournament, Daiseizan won all seven of his matches to claim the makushita yusho with a perfect 7-0. In addition, he secured his promotion to juryo for the following September 2024 tournament.[5]
Juryo Career[]
Daiseizan is the fourth sekitori to come from China, since Nakanokuni in September 2010, and the second sekitori to come from Inner Mongolia since his stablemaster Arashio (former maegashira Sokokurai). At the time of his juryo promotion Daiseizan had not posted a single losing record, excluding the two tournaments which he missed. However, he finished with a 7-8 record in his first tournament as a sekitori.[5]
