Denzan Hiroyasu - 電山 博保 (born June 8, 1988) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Ube, Yamaguchi. He made his debut in March 2004 and wrestled for Otake stable. His highest was makushita 29 and he retired in March 2023.
Early Life[]
Hiroyasu Yoshino was born on June 8, 1988, in Ube, Yamaguchi. During his third year at Ube Shiritsu Kamiube Junior High School, Yoshino was scouted for professional sumo. After graduating junior high school, he entered Otake stable.[1]
Career[]
He made his professional debut in March 2004 alongside Homasho, Kimurayama, Sagatsukasa, Satoyama, and Shirononami. Yoshino was promoted to the sandanme division in January 2007 and the makushita division in September 2008.[2]
In July 2009, he was given the unusual sounding shikona "Migikataagari" (右肩上り) which garnered a lot of attention from the press. His oyakata, Otake Oyakata (former sekiwake Takatoriki), named him with the hope that "everyone can be happy because everything is dark." Otake Oyakata was known for giving wrestlers unusual names.[3] In July 2012, he was aiming for the sandanme yusho, however, he lost on the 9th day to Sensho. Nevertheless, he finished with a strong 6-1 record and was promoted to a career-best makushita 29 for the following September 2012 tournament.[2]
In January 2015 he reverted his ring name back to his surname Yoshino because he "wanted to be known more for his sumo ability, not his rare shikona." Two tournaments later in May 2015, he was given the new shikona "Denzan" (電山). For the remainder of his later career, he bounced back and forth between sandanme and jonidan. He retired from sumo in March 2023.[2]
Fighting Style[]
