Fujinawa Takashi - 藤縄 隆 (born November 2, 1974) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Tsukuba, Ibaraki. He made his debut in January 1993 and wrestled for Isenoumi stable. His highest rank was jonidan 15 and he retired in November 2004.
Career[]
Takashi Sakamoto joined Isenoumi stable and made his professional debut in January 1993. He wrestled under his surname Sakamoto for the first four years of his career before he was given the shikona "Fujinawa" (藤縄) in July 1997. Initially weighing 145 kg (320 lb) when joining sumo, his weight increased up to 215.5 kg (475 lb) in his later career. Despite weighing more than majority of his opponents, he struggled immensely and could not make it past the jonidan division with his highest rank being jonidan 15 which he earned in January 1998.
Retirement from Sumo[]
Fujinawa retired from sumo in November 2004 after nearly 12 years in sumo. His retirement ceremony, or danpatsu-shiki, was held on October 3, 2004. After retiring, he worked at a restaurant in Osaka.
Fighting Style[]
Fujinawa was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He won half of his bouts with a straightforward yorikiri, or force out.
