Fujinishiki Chiyokichi - 藤錦 千代吉 (born January 9, 1920 - June 28, 1961) was a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Suttsu, Hokkaido. He made his debut in May 1938 and last wrestled for Nishonoseki stable. He reached the makuuchi division in October 1948. His highest rank was maegashira 18 and he retired in May 1950.
Career[]
Early Career[]
Fukuta joined Nishonoseki stable at the age of 18 and made his professional debut in May 1938 under the shikona "Fujinishiki" (藤錦). During his time in sandanme, he ended future yokozuna Chiyonoyama's winning streak from his entry into sumo. Moreover, Fujinishiki won two championships in sandanme even though he briefly served in the military in 1942. He was promoted to juryo in November 1945 and makuuchi in October 1948.
Makuuchi Career[]
Fujinishiki struggled in makuuchi and after only two tournaments he was demoted back down to juryo. He never managed to return to the top division and spent majority of his later career in juryo. He retired from sumo in May 1950 to avoid an inevitable demotion to makushita.
Fighting Style[]
Ryukozan was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a migi-yotsu (left hand outside, right hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). He was fond of using throwing techniques.
