Furuta Kengo - 古田 賢悟 (born November 14, 2000) is a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Takehara, Hiroshima. He made his debut in July 2024 and currently wrestles for Nishonoseki stable. His highest rank as of 2025 is sandanme 5.

Early Life[]

Furuta began sumo wrestling from an early age and participated at the All Japan Junior High Sumo Championships during his third year at Takehara Shiritsu Takehara Junior High School. Furuta then attended Takehara High School where he continued to perform well in the high school sumo scene. During his second year, he placed third in the 80 kg weight class at the National High School Selection Tournament, and in his third year, he won the Hiroshima Prefectural High School Inter-High Championships.[1]

After graduating high school, he enrolled at Nippon Sport Science University and was a member of the school's strong sumo club. During college, Furuta competed in many under-85 kg weight class events, often finishing in the top three. After graduation, he remained at Nippon Sport Science University as an assistant and also competed in corporate tournaments. He later joined Nishonoseki stable after being persuaded by Nishonoseki Oyakata (the 72nd Yokozuna Kisenosato) to try out professional sumo.[2]

Furuta made his professional debut in July 2024 and finished with an underwhelming 4-3 record in his first professional tournament. Nevertheless, he rebounded with two consecutive 6-1 records and was promoted to sandanme in March 2025.[3]

Furuta is a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He won most of his bouts with a straightforward yorikiri, or force out.[4]
