Futatsuryu Tokuyoshi - 双ツ龍 徳義 (born March 3, 1930 - February 4, 2006) was a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Muroran, Hokkaido. He made his debut in June 1947 and wrestled for Tokitsukaze stable. He reached the makuuchi division in September 1952 and has four kinboshi. His highest rank was maegashira 1 and he retired in January 1961.

Early Life[]

Araki was born in Muroran, Hokkaido, and his father worked at Fuji Iron & Steel (currently Nippon Steel). Although he himself worked for Fuji Iron & Steel, he looked up to Yokozuna Futabayama, and spent four days visiting the Futabayama Dojo (later renamed Tokitsukaze stable) training quartets in Dazaifu, Fukuoka (the stable was temporarily moved there due to the Pacific War. He subsequently joined the stable and made his professional debut in June 1947.

Early Career[]

Initially wrestling under his surname Araki, he was later given the shikona "Futatsuryu" (双ツ龍) in May 1950. He was promoted to makushita in January 1951 and won the makushita yusho in his debut tournament. He followed with two more winning records and was promoted to juryo in January 1952.

Juryo Career[]

In his first tournament as a sekitori, Futatsuryu finished with a strong 10-5 record. He followed with another 10-5 record and was promoted to makuuchi in September 1952 after only two tournaments in juryo.

Makuuchi Career[]

Futatsuryu was ranked in the top division for a total of 36 tournaments. He never managed to win a special prize, or make san'yaku, with his highest rank being maegashira 1. However, he earned four kinboshi throughout his career, defeating Tochinishiki and Chiyonoyama twice. He was demoted back down to juryo in November 1959 and in November 1960, he posted a disastrous 0-15 record and announced his retirement in the following January 1961 tournament.

Retirement from Sumo[]

Upon retirement from active competition, he became an elder in the Japan Sumo Association, under the name Otowayama. He later acquired the Kumegawa name and reached the Sumo Association's mandatory retirement age in March 1995.

He died on February 4, 2006, at the age of 75.

Fighting Style[]

Futatsuryu was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a migi-yotsu (left hand outside, right hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). His most common kimarite was yorikiri (force out). He was also fond of employing uwatenage (overarm throw) and tsuridashi (lift out).
