Goryu Kazunori - 剛竜 和紀 (born November 28, 1989) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Shima, Mie. He made his debut in January 2010 and wrestled for Kise stable. His highest rank was makushita 12 and he retired in July 2020.

Early Life[]

Kazunori Shibahara was born on November 28, 1989, in Shima, Mie. He attended Hiryu High School in Numazu, Shizuoka, where he was a member of the school's sumo club. After graduating high school, he decided to join professional sumo and entered Kise stable.[1]

Career[]

Shibahara made his professional debut in January 2010 and initially listed his shusshin, or birthplace, as Sumida, Tokyo, before switching to Shima, Mie. In his first official tournament in March 2010, he won all seven of his matches, but missed out on the jonokuchi yusho after losing to stablemate Sasakiyama in the playoff. In May 2010, he transferred to Kitanoumi stable due to a yakuza controversy in Kise stable[2] (he later returned to Kise stable in April 2012 after the stable was re-established).[3] He was promoted to sandanme in November 2010 and makushita in September 2013.[4]

In May 2014, he was given the shikona "Goryu" (剛竜). In May 2016, he finished with a strong 6-1 record and was promoted to a career-best makushita 12 in July 2016, however, he could only manage a 3-4 record in that tournament. From late 2017 onwards, he spent the majority of his time bouncing back and forth between makushita and sandanme. In January 2020, he was given the shikona "Bankoku" (萬國), however, he retired shortly after in July 2020 after two consecutive 2-5 records.[4]

Fighting Style[]
