Goshima Masaharu - 五島 雅治 (born February 27, 2003) is a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Kasugai, Aichi. He made his debut in March 2025 and currently wrestles for Fujishima stable. His highest rank as of 2025 is makushita 9.
Early Life[]
Masaharu Goshima was born on February 27, 2003, in Kasugai, Aichi. He began sumo wrestling during the fourth grade at the local Chukyo Club. During his second year of junior high school, Goshima transferred to Minoshima Junior High School in Arida, Wakayama, to enhance his sumo training. He then attended Minoshima High School, where he reached the top 8 in the National High School Selection Towada Tournament in his first year and again in the National High School Championship in his third year.[1]

After high school, Goshima enrolled at Takushoku University in Tokyo where he was a member of the school's sumo club. He made an immediate impact during his first year, achieving runner-up positions at the All-Japan University Open-Weight Tournament and the East Japan University Rookie Tournament. He also finished third at the East Japan University Open-Weight Tournament during his first year, and was runner-up in the same tournament during his second year. In addition, Goshima finished top 8 in the All-Japan Championships.[1]
During his third year, Goshima performed well in nearly all of the major tournaments, finishing top 8 in both the All-Japan Championships and the National Sports Festival. In addition, he captained Japan's team to a gold medal at the 2023 World Championships. In his fourth year, Goshima won the East Japan Student Sumo Championships.[1] Furthermore, he placed third in both the National Student Sumo Championship as well as the All-Japan Sumo Championship. These performances granted him makushita tsukedashi status and upon graduating university, he joined Fujishima stable.[2]
Career[]
Goshima made his professional debut in March 2025 and due to his amateur accomplishments, he was granted special dispensation which allowed him to make his debut at the bottom of the makushita division. He finished with a strong 6-1 record in his professional debut with his only loss coming against former juryo Kawazoe.[3]

Goshima is an oshi-sumo wrestler who prefers pushing and thrusting techniques to fighting on the mawashi. His most common kimarite used is an oshidashi, or push out.[4]
