Sumowrestling Wiki

Hayama Kenji - 葉山 健治 (born May 31, 1943) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Yokosuka, Kanagawa. He made his debut in May 1958 and last wrestled for Miyagino stable. He reached the juryo division in July 1966. His highest rank was juryo 10 and he retired in September 1967.

Early Life[]

He began practicing judo in elementary school all the way until his first year at Yokosuka Shiritsu Iriyamazu Junior High School. However, he lost his father during his fifth year at elementary school and went through a rebellious spell. He later recovered and was recruited into professional sumo by future komusubi Hirokawa who also came from Yokosuka, Kanagawa.

Career[]

Nakano joined Yoshibayama dojo (later renamed Miyagino stable) and made his professional debut in May 1958. He initially wrestled under many different shikona, or ring names, before settling with "Hayama" (葉山) in March 1965. He was promoted to juryo in July 1966 and lasted four tournaments where he rose as high as juryo 10 in November 1966. After falling down to sandanme, he retired in September 1967.

Fighting Style[]

Hayama was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a hidari-yotsu (right hand outside, left hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). However, his most common kimarite at the sekitori level was oshidashi, or push out.
