Hiyama Tsuyoshi - 桧山 剛志 (born April 6, 1960) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Kamiiso, Hokkaido. He made his debut in March 1976 and last wrestled for Isegahama stable. He reached the juryo division in January 1984. His highest rank was juryo 12 and he retired in January 1987.

Early Life[]

During his fourth year at elementary school, Ikeda already weighed 65 kg (143 Ib) and at twice as much as an adult. He was dominant in sumo and judo and won many district competitions. Due to his success, his neighbors recommended that he give sumo a try. After pondering about the decision for almost a year, he agreed and opted to join professional sumo.

Career[]

Ikeda entered Isegahama stable and made his debut in March 1976 under the shikona "Kiyonowaka" (清の川). He was promoted to sandanme in May 1977 and makushita in January 1979. He changed his shikona to "Hiyama" (桧山) in July 1979 and won the makushita yusho with a perfect 7-0 record in January 1980. He was promoted to juryo in January 1984. Even though he won his first match as a sekitori, he went on to lose the following eight matches. He finished with a poor 3-12 record and was demoted back down to makushita. This proved to be his only tournament as a sekitori. After demotion, he changed his shikona to "Kitanoryu" (北乃龍), but quickly reverted back to "Hiyama" after no improvements in results. By 1986 he fell down to sandanme and announced his retirement after the January 1987 tournament.

Fighting Style[]

Hiyama was a tsuki/oshi specialist, who prefers pushing and thrusting at his opponents rather than fighting on the mawashi or belt. His most common winning kimarite was oshidashi, or push out.
