Ichiki Ryuya - 一木 隆冶 (born November 13, 1993) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Karatsu, Saga. He made his debut in January 2016 and wrestled for Tamanoi stable. His highest rank was makushita 6 and he retired in November 2022.

Early Life[]

Ichiki began sumo wrestling during his second year at Tano Elementary School. During his third year at Karatsu City Hizen Junior High School, he participated at the All-Japan Junior High School Sumo Tournament and the National Junior High School Sumo Championship. After graduating from Kibogaoka High School, he enrolled at Kyushu Institute of Information Sciences and in his first year, he achieved third place at the National Student Sumo Championship's -85 kg weight class.[1]

Career[]

After graduating university, he joined Tamanoi stable which was home to maegashira Azumaryu, a fellow alumnus of Kyushu Institute of Information Sciences. Ichiki made his professional debut in January 2016 alongside Daiamami and Asagyokusei. He reached makushita in November 2016 after less than a year in sumo. He rose as high as makushita 16 in March 2017, but he then stalled and even fell down to sandanme on a couple of occasions. He reached a career-best makushita 6 in September 2020, but he missed this tournament due to a COVID-19 outbreak in his stable.[2] Luckily, he suffered no loss in rank for the following November 2020 tournament. In the November 2020 tournament, Ichiki injured his left ankle in a match against Takakento on the second day and he had withdraw from the tournament.[3] He retired from sumo after the November 2022 tournament.[4]

Ichiki is an oshi-sumo wrestler who prefers pushing and thrusting techniques to fighting on the mawashi. His most common kimarite used is a straightforward oshidashi, or push out. He also regularly used hatakikomi (slap down), tsukiotoshi (thrust down) and hikiotoshi (pull down).[5]
