Ichiwatari Akira - 一渡 明 (born January 11, 1918 - December 9, 1974) was a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Abiko, Chiba. He made his debut in May 1933 and wrestled for Dewanoumi stable. He reached the makuuchi division in January 1939. His highest rank was maegashira 18 and he retired in May 1943.

Career[]

Early Career[]

Akira Watanabe joined Dewanoumi stable and made his professional debut in May 1933 under the shikona "Ichiwatari" (一渡). He breezed through the lower divisions and was promoted to juryo in January 1937 without a single losing record. In his juryo debut, Ichiwatari finished with a 4-7 record and was demoted back down to makushita. He returned back to juryo in January 1938 and was promoted to makuuchi in January 1939.

Makuuchi Career[]

In his top division debut, Ichiwatari finished with a 4-9 record and was demoted back down to juryo. He returned back to makuuchi in January 1940, but could only muster out a 6-9 record. His final appearance in the top division was in January 1943 where he finished with a poor 3-12 record. He subsequently announced his retirement in the following May 1943 tournament.

Retirement from Sumo[]

After retiring, Ichiwatari ran a restaurant, but he later closed the restaurant due to a traffic accident. After that, he ran an inn but soon died due to lingering effects from the accident.

Fighting Style[]

Ichiwatari was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. His most common kimarite was yorikiri, or force out.
