Career[]
Early Career[]
Born in Izumisano, Osaka, he joined Tokitsukaze stable at the age of 21 and made his professional debut in October 1949. Initially wrestling under his surname Yamagata, he won the sandanme yusho with a 12-3 record (back then all divisions wrestled full fifteen days) in January 1951 and was promoted to makushita in May 1951. In September 1952 he posted an 11-4 record at the rank of makushita 4 and was promoted to juryo in the following January 1953 tournament.
Juryo Career[]
Upon promotion to juryo, he was given the shikona "Izuminada" (泉洋). In his first tournament as a sekitori, he finished with a 7-8 record, but followed with two double-digit consecutive winning records. In March 1954, he posted a 9-6 record at the rank of juryo 3 and was promoted to makuuchi in May 1954.
Makuuchi Career[]
Izuminada was ranked in the top division for a total of 28 tournaments, but he struggled to progress up the ranks due to his inability to put on weight. His highest rank was maegashira 6 which he achieved in July 1959. His last top division appearance was in July 1960 and he spent the majority of his later career in juryo.
Retirement from Sumo[]
He retired from sumo in September 1962 at the age of 34 after falling down to makushita. After retiring from sumo, he returned back to his hometown of Izumisano, Osaka, and opened up a chanko restaurant.
Fighting Style[]
Izuminada was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a hidari-yotsu (right hand outside, left hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). His most common kimarite was yorikiri, or force out. He was also fond of employing tsuppari, or a series of rapid thrusts to the chest.
