Kagamiyama stable
Kagamiyama stable (鏡山部屋, Kagamiyama-beya) is a stable of sumo wrestlers, part of the Tokitsukaze ichimon or group of stables. It was set up in November 1970 by former yokozuna Kashiwado, who branched off from the Isenoumi stable. Upon his death in December 1996 the stable passed to his protegé, former sekiwake Tagaryu. The stable closed in 2021, with all personnel transferring to Isenoumi stable.
History[]
Kagamiyama stable was set up on November 1970 by former yokozuna Kashiwado, who branched off from Isenoumi stable. The stable produced their first sekitori when Konuma and Zaonishiki were simultaneously promoted to juryo in May 1975. In 1984, the stable achieved its biggest feat when Tagaryu captured the makuuchi yusho.
Tagaryu would take over the stable in 1996 upon the death of the former Kashiwado. In 2002 - 2003, Kagamiyama would recruit two foreigners. One of them, the Mongolian Kagamio would go on to reach the makuuchi division. The other, American rikishi Kagamifuji would be plagued with injuries and would subsequently retire in 2003, only reaching jonokuchi.
Kagamiyama stable hasn't recruited any rikishi since 2004. As of 2021, the stable only has 2 active rikishi, Kagamio, who has now been demoted to the unsalaried ranks, and Ryusei, the son of Tagaryu. Kagamiyama stable is the smallest active stable in 2021. It was decided at a Japan Sumo Association board meeting on July 21, 2021 that it would close immediately with all its personnel transferring to Isenoumi stable.
Ring Name Conventions[]
Many wrestlers at this stable have taken ring names or shikona that include the character 竜 (read: ryu), meaning dragon, in deference to their coach and the stable's owner, the former Tagaryu.
