He then worked as a waiter while attending Kanda Gaigo University before he was spotted by Wakamatsu Oyakata (former ozeki Asashio) for professional sumo.
Career[]
He joined Wakamatsu stable in November 1990 at the age of 22 which made him the oldest new recruit. He was also the second wrestler to list his shusshin (birth-place) as China since Kiyonohana in 1968. In his first tournament he produced a 4-3 record and was promoted to the jonidan division. In July 1991 he was promoted to a career-best jonidan 79 rank. However, he pulled out of this tournament and continued to sit out of the following tournament.
