Career[]
Early Career[]
Nisaburo Ishii joined Minatogawa stable and made his professional debut in January 1927 under the shikona "Kanenohana" (金ノ花). He was promoted to juryo in May 1931 alongside future yokozuna Futabayama, and he defeated him twice in two consecutive tournaments. Upon promotion to juryo, he was given the new shikona "Kaneminato" (金湊) and he won the juryo yusho in October 1931 with an 8-3 record. However, he left sumo in 1932 due to a strike called the "Shunjuen Incident", which was largely unsuccessful, so he returned to sumo in January 1933 and was promoted to makuuchi in May 1934.
Makuuchi Career[]
Kaneminato was ranked in the top division for a total of 11 tournaments, reaching as high as maegashira 5 in January 1940. Upon falling back down to makushita in January 1943, he immediately retired from the sport.
Retirement from Sumo[]
After retiring, he remained in sumo as an elder of the Japan Sumo Association, working as a coach at Minatogawa stable under the name Hitachiyama Oyakata. Upon Minatogawa stable's closure in November 1947, he transferred to Nishonoseki stable where he continued his coaching duties. He left the sumo world in March 1968.
Fighting Style[]
Kaneminato was one of the smallest rikishi of his time standing only at 1.64 m (5 ft 4.5 in) and peaking at 86 kg (190 Ib). Due to this, his most common kimarite were hatakikomi (slap down), hikiotoshi (pull down), and watashikomi (thigh-grabbing push down).
