Kasugaryu Yoshiyasu - 春日竜 功隠 (born February 25, 1947) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Koto, Tokyo. He made his debut in January 1962 and wrestled for Kasugano stable. He reached the juryo division in March 1970. His highest rank was juryo 6 and he retired in July 1973.
Early Life[]
Nakamura played baseball as a kid, but by the time he reached his third year of junior high school, he already weighed 95 kg (209 Ib) and was recommended to join a sumo tournament. At the tournament he was scouted for professional by a sewanin at Kasugano stable. After consulting with his father, who was a big fan of yokozuna Tochinishiki (who belonged in Kasugano stable), he accepted and joined immediately.
Career[]
He made his professional debut in January 1962 at the age of 14 and was given the shikona "Nakanomura" (中乃村) which is derived from his surname Nakamura. He was promoted to sandanme in March 1963 and makushita in March 1964. He changed his shikona to "Kasugafuji" (春日冨士) in March 1965 before settling down with "Kasugaryu" (春日竜) in November 1966. In January 1970, he produced a 6-1 record at the rank of makushita 6 and was promoted to juryo in the following March 1970 tournament.
In his first tournament as a sekitori, he finished with a 9-6 record and was promoted to his highest rank of juryo 6 in the following tournament, however, he followed with two losing records and was demoted back down to makushita in September 1970. He returned to juryo in May 1971, but could only manage a 6-9 record. He changed his shikona to "Oedo" (大江戸) in September 1972, but after no change in luck, he announced his retirement after the July 1973 tournament.
Fighting Style[]
Kasugaryu was a tsuki/oshi specialist, who prefers pushing and thrusting at his opponents rather than fighting on the mawashi or belt. His most common winning kimarite was oshidashi, or push out.
