Kawachiyama Kazuo - 河内山 一夫 (born August 3, 1936 - August 19, 1975) was a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Sakai, Osaka. He made his debut in May 1954 and last wrestled for Tatsunami stable. He reached the juryo division in July 1963. His highest rank was juryo 7 and he retired in July 1965.
Early Life[]
Kazuo Ueta was born the fourth son of a butcher and he helped out with the family business for about a year after graduating junior high school. He later joined Tatsunami stable and made his professional debut in May 1954.
Career[]
Initially wrestling under the shikona "Nishinokawa" (西ノ川), he was promoted to sandanme in May 1955 and makushita in September 1957. In July 1962 he changed his shikona to "Kawachiyama" (河内山) and was promoted to juryo a year later in July 1963. Kawachiyama was ranked in juryo for a total of eleven tournaments, reaching as high as juryo 7 in November 1963.
He injured his right knee in March 1965 and had to withdraw from the tournament. He subsequently demoted back down to makushita and he announced his retirement in July 1965. He died in August 1975 at the young age of 39.
Fighting Style[]
Kawachiyama was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a hidari-yotsu (right hand outside, left hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). His most common kimarite was yorikiri, or force out.
