Early Life[]
Yasutoki Kayo was born on July 14, 1999, in Ichikawa, Chiba. Kayo began sumo wrestling during his fourth year at Arai Elementary School and he later moved to Niigata to practice sumo at Itoigawa City Nou Junior High School and Niigata Kaiyo High School.[1] After graduating high school, he enrolled at Nippon Sport Science University where he continued his amateur career. In his fourth year of university, he achieved top 8 in both the All Japan Sumo Championship and the National Student Sumo Championship. Due to this, Kayo qualified for sandanme tsukedashi and chose to pursue a career in professional sumo after graduating.[1]
Career[]
Early Career[]
After graduating, Kayo joined Nishonoseki stable because it was home to Nakamura Oyakata (former sekiwake Yoshikaze) who was an alumnus of Nippon Sport Science University as well as Kayo's favorite wrestler.[2] He made his professional debut in May 2022 at the bottom of sandanme and reached makushita in November 2022.[3]
In November 2023, Kayo defeated former sekiwake Wakatakakage and finished the tournament with a strong 6-1 record. As a result, he was promoted to the rank of makushita 1 in January 2024. However, he narrowly missed out on juryo promotion, finishing with a 3-4 record. Nevertheless, he returned to the rank of makushita 1 in May 2024 and this time finished with a 5-2 record, securing promotion to juryo for the July 2024 tournament.[3]
Juryo Career[]
Shortly before his juryo debut, Kayo transferred to the newly-established Nakamura stable, established by former sekiwake Yoshikaze.[4] In his first juryo tournament in July 2024, Kayo finished with a 7-8 record, but was able to maintain his status as a sekitori. In the following September 2024 tournament, Kayo finished with a strong 11-4 record and followed with a respectable 8-7 record in November 2024. He was promoted to the rank of juryo 1 in January 2025, but was unable to capitalize on a promotion to makuuchi, after losing on the final day to Hakuyozan to finish with a 7-8 record. He rebounded with a 9-6 record in March 2025 which earned him a promotion to makuuchi for the May 2025 tournament.[3]
