Kenryu Hatsutaro - 乾龍 初太郎 (born January 2, 1946) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Rubeshibe, Hokkaido. He made his debut in March 1964 and last wrestled for Oshiogawa stable. He reached the juryo division in January 1974. His highest rank was juryo 5 and he retired in March 1978.

Career[]

He made his professional debut in Mach 1964, wrestling under Nishonoseki stable. He initially wrestled under the shikona "Oyoshida" (大吉田) which was derived from his surname. He was promoted to sandanme in November 1964 and makushita in March 1966. In January 1973, he changed his shikona to "Kenryu" (乾龍) and he was promoted to juryo in January 1974 at the age of 28.

Kenryu was ranked in juryo for a total of nine tournaments, reaching as high as juryo 5 in May 1974. In 1975, he transferred to the newly established Oshiogawa stable which was created by his recently retired stablemate Daikirin. His last appearance was a sekitori was in March 1976 and he announced his retirement in March 1978.

Retirement from Sumo[]

After retiring from sumo, he remained in the Japan Sumo Association and became a sewanin (assistant). He was associated with Oshiogawa stable before it closed and he transferred to the affiliated Oguruma stable in 2005. After reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65, he left the Japan Sumo Association in January 2011.

Fighting Style[]

Kenryu was proficient in both oshi-zumo (pushing and thrusting) and yotsu-zumo (grappling). His favorite kimarite was uchigake (inside leg trip), but his most common winning kimarite was yorikiri (force out).
