Kihakuriki Kenta - 氣魄力 健太 (born April 11, 1985) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Osaka City, Osaka. He made his debut in March 2001 and wrestled for Otake stable. His highest was makushita 47 and he retired in May 2015.
Early Life[]
Shigeki Kanaya was born on April 11, 1985, in Osaka's Ikuno Ward and is of Korean descent.[1] His parents run a yakitori restaurant in Osaka. Kanaya initially practiced judo, but decided to join Taiho stable (later renamed Otake stable), as he was inspired by Otake Oyakata's (former sekiwake Takatoriki) top division championship which he won in the March 2000 tournament held in Osaka.[2]
Career[]
Kanaya made his professional debut in March 2001 and reached the sandanme division by May 2003. However, he was unable to establish himself in sandanme due to injuries and was regulated back down to jonidan on several occasions. He was given the shikona "Kihaku" (氣魄) in January 2007. Upon promotion to makushita in March 2009, he added the kanji "Riki" (力), derived from his stablemaster's ring name Takatoriki, to his shikona. Kihakuriki finished with a 4-3 in his makushita debut and was promoted to a career-best makushita 47 in May 2009. He was unable to establish himself in makushita and remained in sandanme for majority of his later career. He was given the new shikona "Daishodo" (大勝道) in March 2012. He retired from sumo in May 2015.[3]
