Early Life[]
Takuma Kato was born on March 8, 1995, in Yokohama's Tsuzuki ward. Originally a swimmer, he attended Eda High School where he was a member of the school's table tennis club. After graduating high school, Kato enrolled at Kokugakuin University in Shibuya, Tokyo, and joined the school's sumo club during his third year.[1] After finishing university, Kato initially wanted to get a job with the Japan Sumo Association, but was rejected, so he opted to go professional instead. He joined Shikihide stable and passed the initial examinations despite already being 25 years old due to the easing of age restrictions for entrants with an amateur background.[2]
Career[]
He made his professional debut in March 2020 and was given the shikona "Katozakura" (加藤桜). In September 2020, he finished with a strong 6-1 record and was promoted to jonidan for the following November 2020 tournament. In July 2021, he was given the new shikona "Kogomaru" (荒剛丸).[3]
