Kojimagawa Noriyasu - 小嶋川 庄吉 (born September 5, 1914 - September 15, 1946) was a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Koto, Tokyo. He made his debut in May 1928 and wrestled for Tatsunami stable. He reached the makuuchi division in January 1938. His highest rank was maegashira 5 and he retired in May 1942.
Career[]
Early Career[]
Shokichi Komehana joined Tatsunami stable and made his professional debut in May 1928 wrestling under the shikona "Kojimagawa" (小嶋川). He reached the juryo division in May 1934, but could only manage a 4-7 record and was demoted back down to makushita. He returned to juryo in January 1937 and was promoted to makuuchi two tournaments later in January 1938.
Makuuchi Career[]
Kojimagawa posted two consecutive winning records from his top division debut and was promoted to a career-best maegashira 5 in January 1939. However, he missed all of the May 1939 tournament and fell back down to juryo in May 1940. He returned to makuuchi in May 1941, but he could only muster out a 4-11 record. He subsequently developed pleurisy and hurriedly retired in May 1942.
Retirement from Sumo[]
After retiring, he remained in sumo as an elder of the Japan Sumo Association, working as a coach at Tatsunami stable under the name Hakkaku Oyakata.
Death[]
He died suddenly on September 15, 1946, while on tour. He was only 32 years old.
Fighting Style[]
Kojimagawa was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. His most common kimarite was yoritaoshi, or frontal crush out.
