He reached the makuuchi division in September 1989. His highest rank was maegashira 13 and he retired in November 1995.
Early Life[]
Araki played soccer in elementary school before switching to judo in junior high school. He continued practicing judo at Toyama Daiichi High School. His high school judo director had contacts with Hanakago stable and he later dropped out of high school and joined the stable in January 1984.
Career[]
Early Career[]
Araki made his professional debut in January 1984 and upon promotion to sandanme in November 1984 he changed his shikona to "Hananowaka" (花乃若). In December 1985, his Hanakago stable closed down and he transferred to Hanaregoma stable. He was promoted to makushita in March 1986 and in November of the same year, he rose to the top of makushita, but finished with a 3-4 record. In May 1988 he changed his shikona to "Komafudo" (駒不動) and three tournaments later he was promoted to juryo.
Juryo Career[]
Komafudo could only manage 4 wins in his sekitori debut and was demoted back down to makushita. Nevertheless, he was immediately promoted back to juryo. In May 1989, he finished with a strong 10-5 record which qualified him for a five-man playoff for the juryo yusho, but he lost the last round to Kushimaumi. He followed with another 10-5 record and was promoted to makuuchi in September 1989.
Makuuchi Career[]
Komafudo struggled in his top division debut. He lost his first six matches and finished with a 5-10 record. He was demoted back down to juryo and he never managed to return back to makuuchi.
Later Career[]
After his makuuchi demotion, Komafudo went on a slump and fell down to makushita in July 1990 after four tournaments in juryo. He eventually returned to juryo in May 1991, but injured his right knee in the following July tournament which resulted in a fall back down to makushita. He returned to juryo once again in November 1992 and he won the juryo yusho in his return. However, injuries continued to plague him and he was again demoted to makushita in September 1993. His last juryo appearance was in May 1994 where he finished with a 6-9 record.
Retirement from Sumo[]
After suffering many injuries throughout his career, Komafudo announced his retirement after the November 1995 tournament. After retiring, he opened up a restaurant in Ogikubo, Tokyo called "Seasonal Cuisine Komafudo Store Namaiki Tokyo" (季節料理 駒不動の店 生粋東京), however, the restaurant closed in 2004.
Fighting Style[]
Komafudo was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a hidari-yotsu (right hand outside, left hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). His favorite kimarite were tsuridashi (frontal lift out) and utchari (backward pivot throw), however his most common kimarite was yorikiri, or force out.
