Kongo Toshihiko - 金剛 敏彦 (born September 24, 1940) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Mitagawa, Saga. He made his debut in March 1958 and wrestled for Nishonoseki stable. He reached the juryo division in July 1963. His highest rank was juryo 10 and he retired in January 1966.
Early Life[]
Nakashima attended Yoshinogari Choritsu Mitagawa Junior High School where he was the captain of the table tennis club. He went on to attend Saga Prefectural Miyaki High School and during his time at the school, he received an offer to join professional sumo. Nakashima at the time rejected it as he wanted to continue with his studies and his parents also did not want him to join as he was their eldest son. However, in the end Nakashima moved to Tokyo and joined professional sumo.
Career[]
He made his professional debut in November 1958 wrestling for Nishonoseki stable. Initially wrestling under his surname, Nakashima was promoted to sandanme in May 1959 and makushita in May 1960. He as promoted to juryo in July 1963 and subsequently changed his shikona to "Kongo" (金剛). He was ranked in juryo for a total of eight tournaments and retired from sumo in January 1966.
Personal Life[]
- In order to obtain his high school diploma while in sumo, he attended night classes at Yukigaya High School. He wanted to attend Kyushu University as it was near his hometown, but he would have to retire from sumo. Instead, he attended Takushoku University which was in Tokyo.
Fighting Style[]
Kongo was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a hidari-yotsu (right hand outside, left hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). His most common kimarite was yorikiri, or force out. He was also fond of employing uwatenage, or overarm throw.
