Kotoarashi Yoshifumi - 琴嵐 佳史 (born October 18, 1972) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Neyagawa, Osaka. He made his debut in March 1988 and wrestled for Sadogatake stable. He reached the juryo division in May 1996. His highest rank was juryo 9 and he retired in March 1997.
Career[]
Early Career[]
After graduating junior high school, Kuri joined Sadogatake stable in March 1988. He initially wrestled under the shikona "Kotokuri" (琴栗) before switching to "Kotoarashi" (琴嵐) in November 1990. He was promoted to sandanme in March 1990 and makushita in November 1990. Kotoarashi steadily climbed the ranks in makushita and by March 1994 he was wrestling in the top tier ranks of makushita. In March 1996, he was ranked at juryo 3 and he posted a 4-3 record which earned him a spot in the juryo division for the May 1996 tournament.
Juryo Career[]
Kotoarashi produced a solid 9-6 record in his sekitori debut, but followed with a poor 5-10 record which sent him back down to makushita in September 1996. The two tournaments proved to be his only appearance as a sekitori.
Retirement from Sumo[]
After being demoted back to makushita, Kotoarashi followed with two more losing records and subsequently announced his retirement at the age of 24 after the March 1997 tournament. Shortly after retiring, Kotoarashi competed in some amateur sumo tournaments in October 1998.
After retirement he opened up an izakaya restaurant in Kadoma called "Jidoriya Kotoarashi" (地鶏家 琴嵐). In December 2005, he opened up his second restaurant called "Dosukoi DINING Kotoarashi" (どすこいDINING琴嵐) in Shinsaibashi, Osaka.
Fighting Style[]
Kotoarashi was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a migi-yotsu (left hand outside, right hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). His most common kimarite was yorikiri, or force out.
