Kuninosato Toshio - 国乃里 登志男 (born August 14, 1964) is a former Brazilian professional sumo wrestler from Sao Paulo. He made his debut in March 1980 and last wrestled for Isegahama stable. His highest rank was makushita 23 and he retired in March 1992.

Career[]

Japanese-Brazilian Robert Toshio Wada joined Isegahama stable, which was already home to fellow Japanese-Brazilian Kiyonomine, and made his professional debut in March 1980, fighting under his family name. Standing at 5 ft 7 in (1.72 m) and weighing only 190 pounds (86 kg) at the time of his debut, he initially struggled. In July 1980, he changed his shikona to "Hakuizumi" (伯泉), and later to "Kuninosato" (国乃里) two years later.

He was promoted to the sandanme division in May 1982 and the makushita division in May 1985. For majority of his career he bounced back and forth between sandanme and makushita. In January 1987, he produced a 6-1 record which qualified for a nine-man playoff, however, he lost to ex-juryo wrestler Dewanoshima by yorikiri (force out). He was promoted to his highest rank of makushita 23 in November 1987. He announced his retirement after the March 1992 tournament.

Fighting Style[]

Kuninosato is a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He won about 70% of his bouts with a straightforward yorikiri, or force out.
