Kyushuzan Yoshio - 九州山 義雄 (born October 20, 1913 - May 30, 1990) was a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Yamada, Fukuoka. He made his debut in January 1930 and wrestled for Dewanoumi stable. He reached the makuuchi division in January 1934 and has 1 kinboshi. His highest rank was komusubi and he retired in June 1945.

Career[]

Early Career[]

Otsubo joined Dewanoumi stable and made his professional debut in January 1930. He reached the juryo division in May 1932 without posting a single losing record. Upon promotion to juryo, he was given the shikona "Kyushuzan" (九州山). He reached makuuchi in January 1934.

Makuuchi Career[]

In January 1937, Kyushuzan finished with an impressive 10-1 record and finished runner-up to yokozuna Futabayama's 11-0 record. He followed with a 7-6 record and was promoted to komusubi for the following January 1938 tournament. Despite finishing with a poor 2-11 record in his san'yaku debut, he still defeated yokozuna Tamanishiki. After the May 1938 tournament, Kyushuzan was called up for military service and fought in the front lines in China. He returned to sumo in May 1941. In May 1942, he defeated yokozuna Haguroyama to earn his first and only kinboshi. He retired from sumo in June 1945.

Retirement from Sumo[]

After retiring from sumo, Kyushuzan transitioned to the world of professional wrestling and worked as a referee for Japan Pro Wrestling Alliance. He died on May 30, 1990, at the age of 76.

Fighting Style[]

Kyushuzan was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. His most common kimarite was shitatenage (underarm throw) followed by shitatehineri (twisting underarm throw).
