Matsumaeyama Kumayoshi - 松前山 熊義 (born August 5, 1909 - March 3, 1984) was a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Hakodate, Hokkaido. He made his debut in May 1925 and wrestled for Takashima stable. He reached the makuuchi division in May 1933. His highest rank was maegashira 1 and he retired in January 1938.

Early Career[]

Kawasaki joined Takashima stable and made his professional debut in May 1925 under the shikona "Tomoeminatoyama" (巴港山). He won the jonokuchi yusho with a perfect 6-0 record in January 1928. Upon promotion to juryo in February 1932, he was given the shikona "Matsumaeyama" (松前山). He reached makuuchi in May 1933.

Makuuchi Career[]

Matsumaeyama was ranked in the top division for a total of 8 tournaments, reaching as high as maegashira 1 in January 1935. In May 1934, he defeated ozeki Musashiyama by kirikaeshi, or twisting backward knee trip. In January 1935, he defeated future yokozuna Futabayama by tsuridashi, or lift out. However, after that, he suffered from an illness and his sumo worsened. As a result, he fell back down to juryo in May 1937 and retired shortly after in January 1938.

Fighting Style[]

Matsumayeama was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. His most common kimarite was shitatenage (underarm throw).
