Mifuneyama Daichi - 御船山 大地 (born March 12, 1991) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Takeo, Saga. He made his debut in March 2013 and wrestled for Kise stable. His highest rank was makushita 16 and he retired in January 2022.

Early Life[]

Daichi Koba was born on March 12, 1991, in Takeo, Saga. He attended Taku High School where he was a member of the school's sumo club.[1] After graduating from high school, Koba enrolled at Kyushu Institute of Information Sciences where continued his amateur sumo career.[1] Upon graduating university, he joined Kise stable.[2]

Career[]

He made his professional debut in March 2013 and wrestled under his surname "Koba" (古場). He finished with a dominant 6-1 record in his first four tournaments and was promoted to makushita in January 2014. He immediately established himself as a makushita regular and reached a career-best makushita 16 in March 2019.[2]

In March 2020, he was given the shikona "Mifuneyama" (御船山). However, shortly after in July 2020, he injured his left knee in a match against against Bushozan and had to withdraw from the tournament as a result. He sat out of the following five consecutive tournaments and was relegated back to the lowest jonokuchi division. In order to not fall completely off the banzuke, he returned to action on day 13 of the July 2021 tournament where he easily defeated Shonanzakura. He returned to full action in September 2021 and finished with a 6-1 record. He followed with a 5-2 record in November 2021, but ultimately retired from the sport in January 2022.[2]

Mifuneyama was an oshi-sumo wrestler who prefers pushing and thrusting techniques to fighting on the mawashi. His most common kimarite used was a straightforward oshidashi, or push out.[3]
