Miyanokaze Yo - 宮乃風 陽 (born January 30, 1999) is a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Nago, Okinawa. He made his debut in May 2021 and currently wrestles for Nakamura stable. He reached the juryo division in May 2025. His highest rank as of 2025 is juryo 13.

Early Life[]

Yo Miyagi was born on January 30, 1999, in Nago, Okinawa. During his childhood, the training stable run by his father, an amateur sumo coach, served as his playground, and he began practicing sumo himself at the age of five.[1] While in elementary school, he also achieved strong results in freestyle wrestling, which he was learning alongside sumo, but upon entering junior high school, he devoted himself exclusively to sumo in accordance with his father's wishes.[2] During his third year of junior high school, Miyagi placed third in the lightweight division of the National Junior High School Sumo Championships.[2]

After junior high school, Miyagi attended Hokubu Agricultural High School where he was a member of the school's sumo club. After graduating high school, Miyagi enrolled at Nippon Sport Science University to continue his amateur career. In 2019, Miyagi won the under 85 kg (187 lb) category in the National Student Weight Class Championships.[3] Upon graduating, Miyagi initially aspired to become a teacher but was recruited into Oguruma stable by Nakamura Oyakata (former sekiwake Yoshikaze).[4]

Career[]

Early Career[]

Miyagi made his professional debut in May 2021. Following the closure of his stable, he moved to Nishonoseki stable in February 2022. He was promoted to sandanme in November 2021 and makushita in May 2022. At the time of his makushita debut, he had not posted a single losing record, however, he finished with a 3-4 record in his first makushita tournament. Nevertheless, he bounced back five consecutive winning records to earn a promotion to the rank of makushita 11. After the May 2024 tournament, Miyagi transferred to the newly-established Nakamura stable, owned by former sekiwake Yoshikaze.[5]

On the first day of the November 2024 tournament, Miyagi's knee accidentally touched the dohyo during a match against Kiryuko, thus losing by tsukihiza, a non-technique. To make matters worse, he was ranked at makushita 2 and finished with a 3-4 record after the tournament and was unable to capitalize on a juryo promotion. In the following January 2025 tournament, Miyagi finished with a 4-3 record, including two wins over juryo-ranked wrestler's Hatsuyama and Daiamami. He was subsequently promoted to the rank of Makushita 1 East for the March 2025 tournament. During the March 2025 tournament, Miyagi finished with another 4-3 record, securing his promotion to juryo for the May 2025 tournament.[6]

Juryo Career[]

Upon his promotion to juryo, he was given the new shikona "Miyanokaze" (宮乃風), a combination of his real name, "Miya" (宮), and his stablemaster's shikona, "Kaze" (風).[7] In his first tournament as a sekitori, Miyanokaze finished with a 6-9 record.[6]
