Nanyonishiki Jiro - 南洋錦 二郎 (born August 8, 1968) is a former American professional sumo wrestler from Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii. He made his debut in May 1989 and last wrestled for Takasago stable. His highest rank was sandanme 24 and he retired in July 1990.

Early Life[]

Jeremiah "Jerry" Onosai was born on August 8, 1968, in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii. He attended University High School in Honolulu where he played linebacker on the school's football team. Apart from football, Onosai also competed in amateur wrestling at the heavyweight division. He graduated from University High School in 1986.

Career[]

Jerry Onosai's older brother Joe was a friend of Salevaa Atisanoe who wrestled in Japan under the shikona Konishiki and reached the second highest rank of ozeki. After high school, he was recruited into Konishiki's Takasago stable, which was also home to American wrestler Shinnishiki, and made his professional debut in May 1989.

He was given the shikona "Nanyonishiki" (南洋錦) and in his first professional tournament he took the jonokuchi yusho with a perfect 7-0 record. He continued his strong performance and produced three more consecutive winning records (kachi-koshi). He suffered his only losing record in March 1990, but bounced back and was promoted to a career-best sandanme 24 in July 1990. However, he sat out of this tournament and his retirement was announced after the tournament.

Personal Life[]

  • Nanyonishiki's brother, Joseph "Joe" Onosai, was a strongman and former American football player. Joe Onosai was a classmate and close friend to ozeki Konishiki.
  • Nanyonishiki is of Samoan descent.
