Nishinoryu Ryutaro - 西ノ龍 龍太朗 (born August 20, 2000) is a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Osaka City, Osaka. He made his debut in November 2018 and currently wrestles for Sakaigawa stable. His highest rank as of 2025 is makushita 4.
Early Life[]
Ryutaro Shimomura was born on August 20, 2000, in Osaka's Chuo Ward to former makuuchi wrestler Tsunenoyama. Shimomura attended Kindai University Junior High School and he was a member of the track and field club where he practiced shot put. He later transferred to Saitama Sakae Junior High School where he began practicing sumo during the second semester of his second year.[1]
After junior high school, he attended Saitama Sakae High School where he continued to practice sumo with the school's strong sumo club. he won the team championship with his school at the National High School Sumo Championship during his third year. After graduating from high school, Shimomura joined Sakaigawa stable because his father was acquaintances with Sakaigawa Oyakata (former komusubi Ryogoku).[1]
Career[]
He made his professional debut in November 2018 and initially wrestled under his surname Shimomura. He was promoted to sandanme in July 2019. In March 2020, he was given the shikona "Nishinoryu" (西ノ龍) which was used by his father during his time in juryo. He reached the makushita division In January 2021 and was able to establish himself in the division.[2]
Family[]
- His father is former maegashira Tsunenoyama who wrestled for Dewanoumi stable from 1980 to 1993.[3]
Fighting Style[]

Nishinoryu defeats Daishomaru by utchari (backward pivot throw)
Nishinoryu is a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He won majority of his bouts with a straightforward yorikiri, or force out. He is also fond of employing utchari (backward pivot throw), having used the move multiple times in 2023 and 2024.[4]
