Oitekaze stable
Oitekaze stable (追手風部屋, Oitekaze-beya) is a stable of sumo wrestlers, part of the Tokitsukaze ichimon or group of stables. It was set up in October 1st, 1998, by former maegashira Daishoyama, who branched off from Tatsunami stable.
As of January 2023 it has 18 active sumo wrestlers.
History[]
Oitekaze stable was established in October 1st, 1998 by former Maegashira Daishoyama, who branched off from Tatsunami stable, taking some wrestlers with him including future sekitori like Hayateumi and Daishodai. Oitekaze stable produced the first European sekitori when Georgian Kokkai was promoted to juryo in 2003.
Ever since July 2005, Kokkai was the only sekitori from Oitekaze stable. In 2008, Daishoumi was promoted to juryo, the first sekitori promotion for Oitekaze stable since Kokkai's promotion in 2003. Kokkai retired in 2012, leaving Oitekaze stable without any sekitori. In 2013, Endo earned promotion to juryo. Since March 2018, Oitekaze stable has been a prominent stable with seven rikishi in the sekitori ranks.
Since Oitekaze oyakata did sumo at Nihon University, many of his rikishi are from Nihon University. His first two sekitori, Hayateumi and Hamanishiki, were former Nihon University sumo members. Recent sekitori such as Endo and Daishoyama also did sumo at Nihon University.
In the January 2021 basho, Daieisho won his first yusho and thus the first makuuchi yusho of Oitekaze stable. That same tournament, Tsurugisho won the juryo yusho. This was the first time since 2005 when the juryo yusho winner and makuuchi yusho winner were from the same stable.
Ring Name Conventions[]
Many wrestlers at this stable take ring names or shikona that begin with the characters 大翔 (read: daishō) or simply 大 (read: dai), in deference to their coach and the stable's owner, the former Daishoyama.
