Early Life[]
Seiya Fukasawa was born on May 12, 2001, in the town of Tsubata in Ishikawa Prefecture. His parents run a day spa called "Yata No Yu" (やたの湯).[1] He was introduced to sumo wrestling by his older brother and began practicing the sport during his first year of elementary school.[1] In his sixth year at elementary school, he reached the top 16 in the National Wanpaku Sumo Championship. He went on to attend Tsubata Choritsu Tsubataminami Junior High School where he won the team competition at the All Japan Junior High School Sumo Championship during his third year.[1]
After junior high school, he was invited to join the Niigata Prefectural Kaiyo High School's sumo club by the future Onosato.[2] After graduating high school, Fukasawa decided to join Naruto stable because Naruto Oyakata (former ozeki Kotooshu) had been scouting him since his time in junior high school.[2]
Career[]
Early Career[]
Fukasawa made his professional debut in March 2020 and was given the shikona "Ofukasawa" (欧深沢). He won the jonidan yusho in November 2020 with a perfect 7-0 record. He was promoted to sandanme for the following January 2021 tournament, and he reached makushita one tournament later in March 2021.[3]
In May 2021, he injured his left ankle and withdrew on the eighth day.[4] For the following July 2021 tournament, he was given the new shikona "Oshoumi" (欧勝海) and subsequently posted two 6-1 records which earned him the rank of makushita 7 for the November 2021 tournament. However, in this tournament he ruptured his left shoulder ligament and had to undergo surgery.[4] He missed the next three tournaments and returned to sumo in July 2022. He won the sandanme yusho in September 2022 and returned to makushita for the following November 2022 tournament.[3]
For the next year, Oshoumi was able to post five consecutive winning records in makushita, rising above his previous career high rank, and being placed in the rank of makushita 2 for the November 2023 tournament. In this basho, Oshoumi achieved a 4-3 winning record, which included bouts against juryo-ranked Asakoryu and Chiyosakae, securing his promotion to juryo for the January 2024 tournament. With this achievement, he became the second sekitori from his stable after Oshoma.[3]
Juryo Career[]
In his debut in the juryo division, Oshoumi was placed at the rank of juryo 13. Despite entering day 10 of the tournament with a record of 3-6, he was able to post 5 consecutive wins to finish with an 8-7 record, improving his rank for the March 2024 tournament. However, he finished with a 6-9 record in March and followed with a 5-10 record in May which sent him back down to makushita for the July 2024 tournament. Nevertheless, Oshoumi finished with a 5-2 record in July 2024 to secure a promotion back to juryo for the September 2024 tournament.[3]
In November 2024, Oshoumi was a strong contender for the juryo yusho for most of the tournament, winning his first nine matches. However, after suffering his first loss to Tsurugisho, he withdrew on the 11th day due to a left shoulder injury.[5] He returned on the 14th day and secured one more win, finishing with a 10-3-2 record. In March 2025, Oshoumi withdrew from the tournament on the sixth day due to a sprained Lisfranc joint in his left leg, which required two weeks of rest to heal.[6]
