Otani Masatada - 大谷 真惟 (born December 25, 1999) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Okinawa City, Okinawa. He made his debut in July 2022 and last wrestled for Isegahama stable. His highest rank was makushita 27 and he retired in May 2024.
Early Life[]
Masatada Otani was born in Okinawa City on December 25, 1999, and is a quarter American as his maternal grandfather was American.[1] He began sumo wrestling during his first year at Chubu Agricultural and Forestry High School in Uruma, Okinawa.[2] After high school, he moved to Tokyo to attend Nihon University where he was a member of the sumo club. During his time in university, he had garnered a reputation of showing poor sportsmanship, having yelled, slapped, and stared at opponents after matches.[3][4] Nevertheless, Otani served as vice-captain of the club during his fourth year. During his final year, Otani lost in the first round of the All Japan Sumo Championships and regretted the loss. As a result, he turned down a job offer he had already made in Okinawa and opted to go professional.[5] He subsequently joined Miyagino stable after graduating university.[6]
Career[]
Otani made his professional debut in July 2022. He won the jonokuchi yusho with a perfect 7-0 record in his first tournament. In November 2022, he won his first six matches, but he missed out on the jonidan yusho after losing his final match to former juryo wrestler Asashiyu. Nevertheless, he followed up with another 6-1 record in January 2023 to earn promotion to makushita for the March 2023 tournament. Otani's progression stalled in makushita as he peaked at makushita 27 in September 2023.[7]
Retirement from Sumo[]
At the end of March 2024 it was confirmed that Otani, and all the wrestlers and coaches from Miyagino stable, would be transferred to Isegahama stable for an indefinite period of time following the abuse case and the retirement of then-Miyagino's top ranker, Hokuseiho.[8] Otani was reluctant to transfer to Isegahama stable and he missed the May 2024 tournament as a result. He never fought a match as a member of Isegahama stable as his retirement was announced after the May 2024 tournament.[9]
