Oyamada Shutaro - 欧山田 修太郎 (born May 19, 1999) is a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Akita City, Akita. He made his debut in May 2022 and currently wrestles for Naruto stable. His highest rank as of 2025 is makushita 28.
Early Life[]
Shuntaro Yamada engaged in freestyle wrestling prior to joining sumo and was a member of the freestyle wrestling club at Akita Commercial High School and Yamanashi Gakuin University.[1] Although he possessed the skills to aim for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, his dream was shattered when he lost to Sosuke Takatani in the semifinals of the All Japan Championships in December 2019.[1] After the loss, Yamada decided to switch up and try out sumo wrestling.[1]
Career[]
Yamada joined Naruto stable and made his professional debut in May 2022 under the shikona "Oyamada" (欧山田). In September 2022, he finished with a 6-1 record in jonokuchi, with his only loss coming from Otani. He continued to post consistent results and was promoted to makushita in January 2024. At the time of his makushita debut, Oyamada had only posted one losing record throughout his career. Nevertheless, Oyamada finished with a 3-4 record in his makushita debut. He returned to makushita in May 2024 and posted a strong 6-1 record.[2]
Fighting Style[]

Oyamada defeats Dewanojo by ashitori (leg pick)
Due to his freestyle wrestling background, Oyamada relies on his technical skill to win bouts and often utilizes kakete, or leg tripping techniques. He has used ashitori (leg pick), kirikaeshi (twisting backward knee trip), and sotogake (outside leg trip), multiple times. Nevertheless, his most common kimarite used is a straightforward oshidashi (push out).[3]
