History[]
Nakadachi stable was established on May 25th, 1998, by former komusubi Ryogoku, who branched off from Dewanoumi stable. When Sakaigawa-oykakata (the 50th yokozuna Sadanoyama) reached the Japan Sumo Association's mandatory retirement age in February 2003, he passed on the Sakaigawa name, and the stable was renamed after Nakadachi oyakata received it.
The stable produced their first sekitori when Iwakiyama, a former amateur champion, was promoted to juryo in 2002. Sakaigawa sekitori, Goeido reached the ozeki rank in 2014, thus becoming the most successful rikishi from Sakaigawa stable. Goeido captured his first makuuchi yusho in 2016, the stable's highest feat.
Sakaigawa's first foreigner, Mongolian Shironoryu, reached juryo in 2010, however couldn't make it to the makuuchi division. Shironoryu retired in 2013. After the foreigner slot opened in Sakaigawa stable, Sakaigawa recruited Mongolian Sadanohikari. Sadanohikari hasn't made the salaried ranks as of 2020.
In June 2020 wrestlers from the stable were among a group of around 20 people who helped rescue a woman from drowning in a nearby river in an apparent suicide attempt. They received a letter of appreciation from the Takenotsuka Police Station. In 2005, Sakaigawa stable's lower ranked wrestler, Satsukiumi, encountered a fire in the Aichi prefecture in Nagoya. Satsukiumi save numerous lives before leaving the scene without reporting his name. After being identified for his heroic actions, Satuskiumi received a letter of appreciation from the Aichi - Konan Fire Department.
In November 2021, Hiradoumi reached juryo, becoming the first new sekitori since Shironoryu in September 2010. And in September 2022, Hiradoumi reached makuuchi, becoming the first new makuuchi debutant since Sadanoumi in 2014.
Ring Name Conventions[]
Many wrestlers at this stable take ring names or shikona that begin with the characters 佐田 (read: sada), in honor of the original head of the stable, yokozuna Sadanoyama.
