Sandanme tsukedashi is system instituted in 2015 where an amateur wrestler finishing in the top 16 of either the All-Japan Championships, National Student Championships, or the National Sports Festival Adults tournament is allowed to skip the bottom two divisions and start at the bottom of the sandanme division. Moreover, high school competitors placing in the top four in the two major tournaments for school-age kids are allowed to start at the bottom of sandanme.
Those who finish in the top 8 of the aforementioned tournaments are allowed to make their debut at the bottom of the makushita division (see makushita tsukedashi for more information).
The first wrestlers to start as sandanme tsukedashi entrants are ozeki Asanoyama and maegashira Yutakayama.
