Seiko - 勢鴻 (born June 17, 1968) is a former Hong Kong professional sumo wrestler. He made his debut in July 1987 and wrestled for Isegahama stable. His highest rank was jonidan 88 and he retired in May 1989.
Early Life[]
There are many different variations of Seiko's birth-name. According to the sumo database, his name is Zhen Bang Gu, while Grand Sumo by Lora Sharnoff, states that is is Chun Bong Koo (Ku). He was scouted by Isegahama Oyakata (ex-ozeki Kiyokuni) at his grandfather's Chinese restaurant inn Tokyo.
Career[]
He made his debut in the July 1987 under the shikona "Seiko" (勢鴻). He was much taller than most of his opponents as he stood at 1.89 m (6 ft 2.5 in). Even though he had an imposing size, he struggled and produced three straight losing records. He reached a career high jonidan 88 in July 1988.
Retirement from Sumo[]
Seiko sat out of the September and November 1988 tournaments and as a result fell off the banzuke. His retirement from the sport was announced after the May 1989 tournament. After retirement he became engaged in the restaurant industry.
Personal Life[]
- Seiko is the first sumo wrestler with a British passport, since Hong Kong was a British Colony at the time of his birth. The only other wrestler to hold a British passport is Hidenokuni Hajime.
- According to his Facebook, He is married and currently lives in Nago, Okinawa.
