Sekinohana Tsutomu - 関の花 勉 (born May 2, 1969) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Sekijo, Ibaraki. He made his debut in March 1975 and last wrestled for Isegahama stable. He reached the juryo division in November 1983. His highest rank was juryo 11 and he retired in May 1990.

Career[]

Kurihara practiced judo in junior high school. His father's acquaintance who was a member of Isegahama stable's koenkai (support group), recommended that he try sumo, so he joined Isegahama stable and made his professional debut in in March 1975. He initially wrestled under the shikona "Kuriharayama" (栗原山) before transitioning to "Sekinohana" (関の花) in March 1979. After eight years in the unsalaried ranks, he was promoted to juryo in November 1983. In his juryo debut, he could only manage 4 wins and was demoted back down to makushita. He remained in makushita for another seven years and announced his retirement after the May 1990 tournament.

Fighting Style[]

Sekinohana was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. His favored techniques were migi-yotsu (left hand outside, right hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt), yori (forcing), and tsuri (lifting).
