Shigenoumi Hirohisa - 重ノ海 博久 (born June 14, 1967) is a former Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Setouchi, Kagoshima. He made his debut in March 1983 and wrestled for Musashigawa stable. He reached the juryo division in November 1994. His highest rank was juryo 11 and he retired in May 1997.

Early Life[]

Shigemura was born the eldest son of a fisherman in the town of Setouchi in Kagoshima prefecture. He practiced judo in elementary school before switching to sumo in junior high school. In his second year of junior high school he contributed to a group victory in the national tournament. During his third year, he met Musashigawa oyakata (the 57th yokozuna Mienoumi) at the national tournament. He was offered a spot in the stable and after graduating he joined Musashigawa stable.

Career[]

Shigemura made his professional debut in March 1983. In November 1983, he won all seven matches, but missed out on the jonidan yusho after losing to Kiyonohana in a playoff. Nevertheless, he was promoted to sandanme in the following tournament and makushita in March 1986. He struggled to climb the rankings for several years as he struggled with injuries. He changed his shikona to "Shigenoumi" (重ノ海) in September 1988.

In September 1993, Shigenoumi posted a strong 6-1 record at the rank of makushita 2 and was promoted to juryo in the following November tournament. In his lone sekitori tournament Shigenoumi could only manage 4 wins and he was demoted back down to makushita in January 1994.

Personal Life[]

  • Shigenoumi's hobbies are listening to music and watching TV.
  • On February 29, 1992, Shigenoumi, still ranked in makushita, was eating out with a supporter in Higashiosaka where he heard a traffic accident outside the restaurant. He immediately went to check on the injured and provided first aid. In response, he was presented with a letter of appreciation from the Fuse Police Station.

Fighting Style[]

Shigenoumi was a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling to pushing and thrusting techniques. He favored a hidari-yotsu (right hand outside, left hand inside) position when gripping his opponent's mawashi (belt). His most common kimarite was yorikiri, or force out.
