Shimizuumi Kosei - 清水海 光星 (born May 24, 2001) is a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Tosashimizu, Kochi. He made his debut in May 2024 and currently wrestles for Sakaigawa stable. His highest rank as of 2025 is makushita 52.

Early Life[]

Kosei Miyazaki was born on May 24, 2001, in Tosashimizu, Kochi. Miyazaki began sumo wrestling at the age of four at a local sumo club. During his third year at Tosashimizu Shiritsu Shimizu Junior High School, Miyazaki reached the top 16 in the National Junior High School Team Tournament. He then moved to Saitama to attend Saitama Sakae High School, which is known for its strong sumo program. In his third year, he placed third in the Kanto Tournament Heavyweight Division (under 115 kg).[1]

After graduating high school, Miyazaki enrolled at Nihon University and was a member of the school's sumo club. In his third year, he reached the top 16 in the All Japan University Selection Kanazawa Tournament. In his fourth year, he placed third in the East Japan Student Weight Class (over 135 kg) and reached the top 8 in the All Japan Student Weight Class (over 135 kg). After finishing university, Miyazaki opted to go professional and joined Sakaigawa stable.[1]

Career[]

He made his professional debut in May 2024 and was given the shikona "Shimizuumi" (清水海). In his first match in the July 2024 tournament, Shimizuumi defeated former maegashira Enho by uwatedashinage (pulling overarm throw) in a surprise win. He went on to win his remaining bouts to claim the jonokuchi yusho with a perfect 7-0 record, gaining immediate promotion to the jonidan division for the September 2024 tournament. He replicated his performance in September, finishing with yet another perfect 7-0 record to claim the jonidan yusho. He followed with two 4-3 records in sandanme and was promoted to makushita in March 2025.[2]

Personal Life[]

  • Shimizuumi is the third son of four brothers. His eldest brother, Taiki, is also a professional sumo wrestler at Tokitsukaze stable under the shikona "Tosashimizu" (土佐清水). His second eldest brother, Rei, is a member of the Wakayama Prefectural Office Sumo Club. His youngest brother, Toranosuke, was a member of the Saitama Sakae High School sumo team.[1]

Shimizuumi's favored techniques are listed at the Sumo Association as migi-yotsu (a left hand outside, right hand inside grip on the opponent's mawashi) and nage (throwing).[3] However, his most common winning kimarite is oshidashi, or push out.[4]
